[ Palo Alto, CA ] Pamela Walsh Gallery is pleased to present Entangled Roots, a solo exhibition of new paintings by San Francisco-based artist Anna Sidana. The show will open on September 7th with an Artist Reception from 5-7 p.m. Join us at 6pm to hear Anna talk about her artistic practice and her newest works. The exhibition will be on view in the gallery until October 12th, 2024

Building upon the success of her debut exhibition, Tall Cotton, this new exhibition marks a compelling evolution in Sidana's artistic exploration. Entangled Roots delves deeply into the complex interconnections between identity, heritage, and resilience. Drawing inspiration from her experiences as an immigrant and woman of color, Sidana reflects on the past that anchors her while exploring new paths and establishing fresh roots in her ongoing journey.

Entangled Roots speaks to the intricate relationships between the various aspects of Sidana’s identity—her cultural heritage, personal memories, and the challenges of navigating life in a new land, especially as a woman. Her paintings serve as a visual metaphor for this journey, blending floral and arboreal motifs from her native India with symbols of strength and resilience, like barbs and thorns. These elements create a powerful narrative of overcoming adversity, growth, and transformation. Her brushstrokes, a harmonious blend of boldness and delicacy, capture the dualities of her experience—the beauty and the struggle, the familiar and the unknown. The vibrant canvases in this collection draw on the rich tapestry of her childhood memories in India, where cotton blooms, mango groves, and peacock feathers imprinted upon her a deep and permanent connection to the natural world.

As an immigrant, Sidana’s journey involved reconciling and embracing the entanglements of her identity. The migration process, with its inherent challenges and uncertainties, compelled her to explore the deep roots linking her past with the new culture she encountered. "Navigating a new life in Silicon Valley made me realize that my Indian roots are not something to be left behind but to be embraced and integrated with my new experiences. My art became a means to express this blending of worlds—a celebration of the beauty and challenges of being ‘entangled’ in multiple cultures and identities," Sidana explains.

Anna Sidana’s work has been exhibited at esteemed institutions such as the de Young Museum of San Francisco, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, The Diego Rivera Gallery, and Times Square in New York. She has been selected for the prestigious London Art Biennale and is the recipient of two Sheridan Awards. Sidana also had the honor of having her artwork featured in the Architectural Review magazine at the Architecture Biennale in Venice to accompany the launch of a book on Gender Fluidity.  In addition to her artistic practice, Sidana serves on the board of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program and served on the board of ZERO1, dedicating her time and expertise to furthering the arts community in Silicon Valley,  the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Sidana holds a bachelor's degree from the British Computer Society (BCS) and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI).
