East Coast Echoes: Larry Horowitz
East Coast Echoes embarks on a nostalgic exploration of the American landscape, evoking memories of treasured moments and iconic places. Larry Horowitz, celebrated for his commitment to en plein air painting, traverses the countryside to capture scenes of the American landscape that are slowly being eclipsed by modern development. Drawing inspiration from the Hudson River School painters—artists who sought to immortalize the untouched beauty of the American wilderness—Horowitz strives to preserve images of these rapidly vanishing landscapes. His search for scenes that resonate with history and emotion is evident in each piece. “I find what is left of the vanishing American landscape,” Horowitz explains. “I distill it through the sepia eyes of the past and the digital eyes of the present.”
The exhibition features new works inspired by Horowitz’s recent travels along the East Coast, offering an immersive experience of familiar vistas that embody a profound sense of place. From the sultry, lingering days of summer in South Carolina, to the brisk and invigorating autumn air in Vermont, each painting is a stunning interpretation of the diverse and breathtaking American environment. “I try to listen carefully to what the painting wants to be,” Horowitz states in his artist’s statement. “I paint quickly because the light is constantly changing. I tell the truth as I see it, leaving room for others to enter and have their own emotional response.”
Horowitz’s work is celebrated for its masterful use of texture and color, which breathe life into the American landscape with a sense of wonder and discovery. As echoes of a fading past resonate through the scenes he captures, his background in abstract expressionism allows him to blend reality with abstraction, creating a distinctive visual language that is uniquely his own.
Born in 1956 in New York City, Larry Horowitz is a distinguished American landscape painter with a deep reverence for the natural world. A graduate of SUNY Purchase, Horowitz was mentored by the legendary Wolf Kahn. His illustrious career includes over 90 solo exhibitions, with his work featured in prominent corporate and private collections, including IBM, General Electric, and Johnson & Johnson. Horowitz’s paintings have also been honored in the prestigious Arts-In-Embassies program.
