Larry Horowitz American, b. 1956

Larry Horowitz is an acclaimed contemporary artist whose paintings capture the essence of the ever-changing American landscape. Born in 1956 in New York City, he graduated from SUNY Purchase and became an apprentice to Wolf Kahn. Horowitz's education in abstract expressionism and the influence of tonalist landscapes by Kahn helped him develop a unique artistic language that combines abstraction and representation.

As a landscape painter, Horowitz’s artistic practice is a blend of the plein air tradition as practiced by Corot and Monet with contemporary push/pull abstraction brought to the United States by Hans Hoffman and handed down to Wolf Kahn and others. He is fascinated by the way the landscape can reflect both past and present. The artwork evolves through the addition and subtraction of color. “During a studio visit with Willem de Kooning, I saw first hand what American painting was all about. The viscosity, the smell and the act of moving the paint around was the subject of the painting. This is how I approach my work," he says. "I listen carefully to what the painting wants to be and tell the truth as I see it, leaving room for others to have their own emotional response."

Horowitz's work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and Canada and is featured in many major corporate and private collections. His work was selected for the Arts-In-Embassies program at the United States Embassies in Iceland and Russia. His ability to seamlessly blend realism and abstraction has earned him a reputation as a unique and visionary artist whose paintings capture the beauty and transience of the American landscape.
